DuPont Marsh is
owned by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), but is managed
by your Erie MetroParks. It is located on River Road, 3 miles
south of the city of Huron. The entrance and parking area are
located near the base of the Erie County water tower. The Preserve
is one of the best remaining riverine marshes in Ohio and is an
excellent site for viewing wildlife. Most of the preserve consists
of a marsh situated along the edge of the Huron River |
 |
|
 |
One of the most significant species occurring in the marsh is the leafy
blue flag, a state endangered plant. It is distinguished by its
leaning stems that are much shorter than the leaves, and it may bear a
small blue flower in late spring. In order to protect the unique
natural characteristics of the preserve, great care must be exercised
and special regulations observed. |
|
A short trail system runs from the parking area to the marsh. Few
river marshes remain anywhere in Ohio and DuPont Marsh plays an
important role in the life history and nutrition of Lake Erie fish and
waterfowl. |
