Pelton Park
Nested behind the Sandusky Mall, amid a sea of recent commercial and residential development, this wooded refuge cotains several distinct ecological zones including forest, meadow and stream bottom. There are walking trails that snake their way through the property. The forest area is filled with mature white and red oaks, wild cherry and shag bark hickory. Meadow plants grow in abundance and include goldenrod, fleabane and several types of grasses. The stream lowlands and nearby shallow wetlands host numerous moisture-adapted plants, as well as bulfrogs and toads.
There are many different plant and animal species that make their home at Pelton Park, Over 150 plant species have been identified at Pelton Park. In the spring the elusive Green Dragon wildflower blooms, as do the Jack in the Pulpit, Spring-beauty and Mayapple. The autumn display is lush with Wingstem and Arrowhead.A variety of birds and animals call Pelton Park their home. Eastern Chipmunk and Fox Squirrel chatter among the oaks. Regular nesters include Northern Cardinals, Indigo Buntings, Tufted Titmice, White breasted Nuthatches, House wrens and an occasional wood duck family. The small wetland pond provides an appealing habitat for painted turtles and dragon flies.
