Nestled behind the Sandusky Mall, amid a sea of recent commercial
and residential development, this wooded refuge contains several
distinct ecological zones including forest, meadow and stream bottom.
|
 |
|
 |
Walking
trails wander through old woods.
The forest area is filled
with mature white and red oaks, wild cherry and shag bark
hickory.
|
|
Meadow plants grow in abundance.
In the meadow, grasses, goldenrod and fleabane thrive. |
 |
|
 |
Stream bottom and wetland pond area.
The stream lowlands and
nearby shallow
wetlands host numerous moisture-adapted plants, as well as bullfrogs and toads.
|
|
Spring
and fall wildflower displays.
Over 150 plant
species have been identified at Pelton Park. In the spring the
elusive Green Dragon wildflower
blooms, as do the Jack in the
Pulpit, Spring-beauty and Mayapple.
The autumn display is lush with Wingstem and Arrowhead.

Home
for many species of
local wildlife.
A variety of birds and
animals call Pelton Park their
home. Eastern Chipmunk and
Fox Squirrel chatter among the
oaks. Regular nesters include Northern Cardinals, Indigo
Buntings,
Tufted Titmice, White breasted
Nuthatches, House wrens and an
occasional wood duck family. The small wetland pond
provides an appealing
habitat for painted
turtles and dragon flies.
